Approach

I am a technically minded Geographer with 7+ years of professional GIS consulting experience for public and private sector clients. I have experience working on problems across a variety of applications in the natural and social sciences. I use both a technical and analytical approach in my work.

I welcome you to look over some of my skills and experience here on my site and contact me to see how I can contribute to your project or mission.

Experience

Geospatial Developer - NYC Department of Health 2021 - Present
Currently under contract at DOHMH in a role with software development (65%), GIS administration (20%) and analyst (15%) responsibilities.

Software Development Projects:
  • SDE Catalog: Data-transformation app leveraging ogr2ogr. The app gives an interface to transform and download SpatialSQL data from a ‘single source of truth’ database in a variety of common formats.
  • Desktop License Monitor: Flask application for tracking ArcGIS Desktop license status. Pipeline includes calling the FLEXnet command line utility and writing the output to an SQL database which is rendered to the user in browser with Flask.
  • GeoPortal: React.js application for geocoding tabular addresses. Two APIs geocode input and users can view/download results.Meets NYC DOHMH and HIPAA standards for data privacy.

GIS Administration:
  • General administration of ArcGIS Server, Portal and AGOL and Desktop environments
  • Oversaw migration of ArcGIS Server and Portal (now Enterprise) to new in-house servers
  • Administration of Enterprise data stores with an emphasis on locators and geocoding services

Analytics:
  • Produced several utilities as Python Notebooks including server performance monitor, geocoding results/accuracy comparison of common NYC geocoding APIs

Geographer - Biohabitats Inc. 2017 - 2021
  • I built tools that give insight to the function of natural and man made systems within and of the built-environment.
  • These tools were built using a suite of open source and proprietary software and programming languages. The tools are used both internally and among Biohabitats' external collaborators.
  • I would generate insights to these systems though data analysis, visualization and narrative reporting.
  • I also held and stumped for an interest in meta and cross-sectional metrics for measures of success across scales, from project to firm, and throughout the industry.

Graduate Researcher - Indiana University 2015 - 2017
  • Worked with an interdisciplinary group of researchers on a collaborative research project with a focus on food security and resource use in Eastern Africa - funded by the National Science Foundation (SES 1115009)
  • Designed and implemented field data collection in Zambia; with colleagues, lead a group of more than 15 international researchers and field workers in the collection of physical and social data for over 1200 farms throughout the country
  • Systematically analyzed field and remote data; generated reports for presentation to academic, governmental and funding agencies
  • Constructed an API to collect data submitted by farmers via weekly SMS survey

Field Researcher - University of Maryland, College Park2013 - 2015
  • Performed site measurements of above-ground forest biomass as ground-control data for NASA Carbon Monitoring System funded project
  • Collected data on forest composition through the Chesapeake Bay Watershed and Maryland’s Appalachian Mountains
  • Used GPS and GIS to determine sample point locations and communicated with property owners or land-stewards to allow access to sites
  • Made forest compositions measurements with sonic and laser-based technology as well as tree identification
  • Prepared and organized data for code input using mobile app developed by UMD Geography
